Understanding the Verse

In this verse Krishna classifies the sincere seekers of the Divine into four distinct categories, each motivated by a different inner condition. The first group, the ‘ārtaḥ’, are those who are overwhelmed by distress, grief, or profound insecurity. Their yearning for relief drives them toward devotion, because surrender to the Supreme offers a promise of solace and protection beyond the fleeting comforts of worldly life. By turning to the Divine, they discover a deeper, unshakable peace that transcends material anxieties.

The second category, the ‘jijñāsur’, represents the intellectually curious. These individuals are propelled by a burning desire to understand the ultimate truth. Their questions are not merely academic; they are existential, seeking answers to the nature of the self, the universe, and the relationship between the two. Through devotion, they find a living curriculum where experience and wisdom converge, allowing them to move from speculative thought to direct realization.

The third type, the ‘artha‑arthī’, seek material prosperity, power, or status. While their initial aim may appear materialistic, Krishna assures them that genuine devotion can transform this pursuit into a higher aim. When one offers the fruits of worldly success to the Divine, the resulting humility and gratitude purify the desire, turning it into a vehicle for spiritual growth. Finally, the ‘jñānī’ are those already established in self‑knowledge, who recognize the impermanent nature of phenomena. Their devotion is not born of lack but of an affirmation of the Supreme as the ultimate reality. By worshiping Krishna, they deepen their insight, integrating intellectual understanding with devotional love. Together, these four profiles illustrate that Krishna’s grace is accessible to all regardless of their starting point, and that sincere devotion can refine any motive into a path toward liberation.
