Understanding the Verse

In this verse, Duryodhana continues listing the formidable warriors on the Pandava side, recognizing their strength and valor. He names a few key figures who are all maharathis—elite warriors capable of fighting and defeating thousands of enemies in battle. Yudhāmanyu: Known for his bravery and skill in warfare, Yudhāmanyu was a powerful fighter in the Pandava army, respected for his military prowess. Uttamaujā: Another highly skilled warrior, Uttamaujā was celebrated for his strength and bravery in battle. He played a vital role in the Pandava forces. Son of Subhadrā: This refers to Abhimanyu, the son of Subhadrā (Arjuna's sister). Abhimanyu was a remarkable warrior known for his valor, despite his young age. He was famous for his skills in breaking through complex military formations (chakravyuha). Sons of Draupadī: The five sons of Draupadī, known as the Upapandavas, were trained warriors who fought bravely in the battle of Kurukshetra. These sons, though young, were powerful and courageous, often compared to their uncles, the Pandavas. Duryodhana’s statement reveals his anxiety as he realizes the strength of the Pandava army. The maharathis listed by Duryodhana were not just powerful warriors but also key strategic players in the battlefield. Each of these warriors could easily match the strength of 10,000 regular soldiers, which made the Pandava forces not only formidable but tactically superior despite their smaller numbers compared to the Kaurava army. Duryodhana recognizes that each of these warriors, including Abhimanyu, the young son of Subhadrā, and the sons of Draupadī, have the potential to turn the tide of battle. By listing these warriors, Duryodhana acknowledges that while the Kaurava army may have greater numbers, the Pandava army is more skilled and strategically poised for victory.
